Rep. Ro Khanna, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California's 17th district, shared his views on social security and job losses in rural communities through a series of tweets on March 22, 2025. Khanna has been serving in Congress since 2017 after replacing Mike Honda.
In a tweet posted at 12:29 PM UTC, Khanna highlighted the importance of Social Security for Americans. He stated that "87% of Americans across the aisle believe Social Security should remain a priority for the nation no matter the state of the budget." He emphasized that more than 90% of seniors rely on this program and argued against cutting it to benefit the wealthy.
Later that day, at 3:10 PM UTC, Khanna addressed recent job losses due to factory closures and layoffs. He tweeted that "866 people lost their jobs this week when 5 factories closed and 4 conducted mass layoffs."
In another tweet posted simultaneously, he discussed the impact of deindustrialization on rural communities in the United States. Khanna wrote, "Many rural U.S. communities rely on good-paying factory jobs, but as deindustrialization has taken hold, these jobs have been slowly eliminated." He suggested that Congress could play a role in restoring industry to these towns by identifying which factories closed this week and understanding why they did so.
