The Amy J. Blue Awards, an annual tradition at Stanford University, have been announced for 2024. The award recognizes exceptional contributions by staff members to the university community. This year's recipients are Victor Madrigal, Penelope Van Tuyl, and Madika Bryant.
Every spring, the award is presented in honor of the late Amy J. Blue, a long-standing Stanford employee who held numerous positions at the university during the 1970s and 1980s. This year saw 712 nominations for 293 individuals from across the Stanford community.
Madrigal, Van Tuyl, and Bryant were each surprised with their awards through a staged fake meeting. The award comes with a $4,000 cash prize.
Victor Madrigal serves as director of alumni and student class outreach at the Stanford Alumni Association. Born in Mexico and raised in Santa Ana, California, he graduated from Stanford in 1994 with a degree in public policy focused on higher education.
Penelope Van Tuyl is a human rights lawyer and associate director of the Center for Human Rights and International Justice at Stanford. She was born at Stanford Hospital and raised in Palo Alto.
Madika Bryant is the administrative director for the Practice of Medicine (POM) course at the School of Medicine. She was born and raised in Las Vegas before completing her undergraduate studies at Howard University. After traveling to Japan as a Fulbright Scholar to study Japanese literature and history, she arrived at Stanford as a graduate student.
The awards will be presented by President Richard Saller on Thursday, May 16th at 4 p.m., during a ceremony in Lagunita Courtyard that is open to all attendees.
