Washington, D.C. -- On April 24 we remember and honor the lives lost during the Armenian Genocide - one of the darkest chapters in human history. We just commemorated Yom HaShoah - the Holocaust - and we were taught that to forget the name of the victim is as if to kill them again. That's why today we pause to honor and remember the 1.5 million Armenians who were tragically murdered in the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923 because genocide denial is the first step in the next genocide.
While we spend today reflecting on the memory of the victims, we also reaffirm our solidarity with the Armenian people of Artsakh who currently continue to face hostility by Azerbaijan and Turkey.
As I said in a speech during a Congressional Armenian Genocide observance ceremony, we still have a lot to do. They said that we couldn't pass a resolution that officially recognizes the Armenian genocide, yet we did. They said they could drive the people of Armenia from Artsakh - and we'll prove them wrong again.
I stand in solidarity with the people of Armenia and will continue to do so, as I have for over 26 years in the halls of Congress.
