Virginia Tech defeated Stanford 10-2 on Saturday, March 28, to even their three-game baseball series at English Field.
The result halted a five-game win streak for Stanford, which now holds a record of 12-13 overall and 2-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech improved its record to 13-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
Stanford sophomore Rintaro Sasaki hit his ninth home run of the season with one out in the second inning, marking his second consecutive game with a homer and his fourth in six games. This was also Stanford’s first hit of the game. However, Virginia Tech starting pitcher Brett Renfrow limited further damage by allowing only two hits and two walks over seven and one-third innings while striking out twelve batters. The win was Renfrow’s first of the season.
Stanford pitcher Sam Garewal took the loss after giving up four runs in two innings, including a three-run home run by Henry Cooke during the second inning. Cooke’s homer was followed by another from Ethan Gibson in the fourth inning that extended Virginia Tech’s lead to 6-1. The Hokies added additional runs in subsequent innings before both teams scored once more each in the eighth.
The deciding game of this three-game set is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
