Tempie Brown has been appointed as the General Manager of Stanford women’s basketball, while also continuing in her role as the Harry K. and Ida S. Berland Associated Head Women’s Basketball Coach.
Brown expressed appreciation for the new responsibilities, stating, “I am honored to undertake this role and want to thank Kate for the opportunity to impact the future of Stanford women’s basketball. Stanford is fully committed to supporting our student-athletes in all facets of their life, basketball and beyond and I am grateful to be able to continue that work as the college athletics landscape evolves.”
In her tenth season with Stanford across two separate periods, Brown will now oversee areas such as name, image and likeness (NIL) management, revenue strategy, roster and scholarship optimization, and operational alignment. She will collaborate closely with leaders from various departments at Stanford.
Kate Paye, Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women’s Basketball, commented on Brown’s expanded duties: “Having a general manager to run point on all of these areas is more important now than ever. Tempie has been doing a lot of this already and gives us a big advantage in an industry that is constantly changing. She’s a tireless worker who gets things done, a strong communicator and relationship-builder, and always puts our student-athletes and program first.”
During Brown’s tenure with the Cardinal program, Stanford has achieved 261 wins against 78 losses (.770 winning percentage), reached two Final Fours, four Elite Eights, seven Sweet Sixteens, won two Pac-12 regular season titles (2014, 2024), and three Pac-12 Tournament championships (2015, 2017, 2019).
Brown returned to Stanford for the 2023-24 season after previously serving from 2013-14 through 2019-20. She was promoted to associate head coach on April 23, 2024.
Her earlier period at Stanford included working primarily with post players such as All-American Alanna Smith—who later became WNBA Co-Defensive Player of the Year—and Erica McCall. Brown also contributed to securing five consecutive top-10 recruiting classes.
Before joining Stanford in 2013, Brown spent four years at Michigan State University where she rose to associate head coach and helped guide the team to NCAA Tournament appearances each year along with winning its first Big Ten title in 2011.
With nearly thirty years in collegiate coaching roles—including positions at Memphis, Northwestern, Lehigh, Eastern Michigan, and Saginaw Valley State—Brown brings extensive experience to her new position.
A graduate of Michigan in kinesiology (1990) with a master’s degree in exercise physiology (1992), Brown played four seasons for the Wolverines’ women’s basketball team. She remains among Michigan’s top scorers with over one thousand points and holds rankings within career assists and steals categories.
