The Faculty Senate decided not to rescind its 2020 censure of Scott Atlas, a Hoover Institution fellow and former COVID-19 adviser to President Donald Trump. The decision followed extensive discussions during their meeting on Thursday.
Provost Jenny Martinez addressed disciplinary hearings related to student protests involving the occupation of the president’s office. Students were found responsible for violating university policies, resulting in sanctions such as suspensions, probation, delayed degree conferrals, and community service hours. The students involved may still face criminal charges. Martinez stated that the university is reviewing the fairness and timeliness of its disciplinary process.
“We’re not able to provide additional details due to student privacy considerations," said Martinez. "But in answering your question, I thought it was important for the safety and integrity of the campus community."
In earlier debates about rescinding Atlas' censure, some senators argued he was denied due process and that it violated academic freedom principles. However, others stressed that rescinding could validate Atlas’ views on COVID-19, which they disagreed with.
James Ferrell expressed concerns about validating Atlas’ conduct during the pandemic: “He denied basic established facts about COVID." Steven Goodman emphasized the threat posed by a defamation lawsuit from Atlas as an attack on faculty free speech.
Jonathan Berk called for correcting what he termed a “mistake” regarding freedom of speech: “Good, happy speech needs no protection.” Julie Parsonnet highlighted concerns at that time about increasing COVID cases: “We were very concerned about being overwhelmed.”
Josiah Ober defended democratic rights even during emergencies: “It is absolutely the worst thing...to create a precedent like this just because it was a time of emergency.”
Sara Singer explained her reasons for signing a letter against Atlas’ statements: “I signed the letter to support trusted colleagues...in what was clearly a moment of crisis.”
The vote ended with 21-13 against rescission via secret ballot.
Deans from various schools also presented their priorities during this session:
Mary Beth Mudgett from Humanities & Sciences emphasized interdisciplinary programs needing resources for technology and data-intensive research. Dean George Triantis from Law School focused on adapting education to AI's impact on legal practice while rejuvenating faculty amid retirements. Peter DeMarzo discussed new initiatives at Graduate School of Business aimed at financial decision-making and societal intersections with business.
Jennifer Widom highlighted engineering advancements at School of Engineering through investments in nanofabrication spaces alongside celebrating its centennial next year.
