Stanford University's women's soccer team secured a significant victory against North Carolina, winning 1-0 at Cagan Stadium. The match marked a strong comeback for Stanford following their recent loss to Duke.

Sophomore Shae Harvey scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute, assisted by freshman Eleanor Klinger. Joelle Jung initiated the play that led to Harvey's goal by switching the field and passing to Klinger, who then set up Harvey with a cross. This goal broke the deadlock and ensured Stanford's win over North Carolina.

The game was tightly contested and physical, with Stanford receiving three yellow cards. Possession was nearly equal between the teams, with North Carolina holding a slight edge at 52%. Despite combining for 25 shots overall, quality opportunities were limited. Clare Gagne, UNC's goalkeeper, recorded five saves, while Stanford's senior goalkeeper Haley Craig made three stops.

Craig has now achieved eight shutouts this season. Overall, Stanford has managed nine shutouts in its first 15 matches of the season and maintained clean sheets in 29 of its last 48 games.

Stanford is scheduled to travel next week for ACC matches against Louisville and Notre Dame. They will face Louisville on Thursday at 4 p.m. PT and Notre Dame on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.

In historical context, Sunday's match marked the twelfth out of seventeen encounters between Stanford and North Carolina decided by one goal or fewer. It was also Stanford's first victory over a top-five opponent since defeating UCLA in October 2022.

Shae Harvey played an instrumental role throughout the week by scoring both goals against Duke and North Carolina. The match featured only three corner kicks combined from both teams, with Stanford having a slight advantage of two corners to one.

Since 2014, Stanford holds an impressive record of 118 wins at Cagan Stadium against just six losses and ten draws. This season alone they are noted for their success in close matches with an 8-1-0 record in games decided by one goal.

Harvey along with Elise Evans, Mia Bhuta, Jasmine Aikey, Nya Harrison played full minutes on the field while Andrea Kitahata logged significant playing time as well.

North Carolina initially outshot Stanford in the first half but saw roles reversed as Stanford took control in the second half leading to their eventual win.
