Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel, which took place on October 7, 2023. Over the past year, the conflict in the region has affected many in the Stanford community, who have experienced feelings of loss and uncertainty.

The university community has been engaged in discussions to better understand this complex situation. This quarter offers further opportunities for reflection and learning about the ongoing impacts of this conflict.

Starting Monday, Stanford's Office for Religious and Spiritual Life (ORSL) will offer "Holding Each Other Through A Difficult Week: Open Sanctuary Space" for quiet prayer and reflection. Chaplains will be available to provide spiritual care and support. ORSL will also hold a daily moment of silence at 4 p.m., followed by tea and conversations.

Hillel will host a memorial ceremony on October 7 in Meyer Green from noon to 1 p.m., featuring candle lighting, prayer, and poetry recitals. Therapists will lead sharing circles from 10 a.m. to noon. The day includes a talk by a survivor of the Nova massacre from 6 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a memorial walk.

An exhibit of photographs by Israeli photojournalist Zvi Koren will be displayed in Koret Pavilion from October 8-14.

The Markaz Resource Center is organizing support groups through its Muslim Mental Health Initiative. Counseling sessions titled “Let's Talk In Community” will be held starting October 10.

Student organizations are also planning remembrances on October 7. These include a vigil organized by Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and an installation by Stanford Israel Association (SIA).

Several events throughout October and November aim to deepen understanding of related issues. Notably, Amichai Magen will deliver a webinar on October 6 discussing Israel’s politics post-October 7th attacks. On October 9, Jonathan Judaken will discuss his book as part of a series organized by Ari Y. Kelman.

Further lectures include topics like anti-Semitism and global Palestinian student activism, featuring speakers such as Dr. Maha Nassar and Yale historian Nurfadzilah Yahaya.

Courses exploring Middle Eastern history are available this quarter with faculty like Joel Beinin teaching classes focused on historical conflicts involving Palestine, Zionism, and Israel.
