A five-day, four-night summer residential program at Stanford University offers students with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) or neurodivergent students a glimpse into college life. The program features comprehensive content and engaging activities during the day, with evenings dedicated to social interactions such as dining in a hall, living in dorms, and peer engagement.
The program includes a variety of activities. A Taiko Drum performance and Sports Day with Stanford athletes were highlighted as key events. Dr. Peter Bulova from the University of Pittsburgh/UPMC, Dr. Dennis McGuire, author of “Mental Wellness of Adults with Down Syndrome,” and Jon Santoro from USC's Keck School of Medicine are among the notable speakers addressing adult medical care, mental health, and Down Syndrome Regression Disorder.
Leadership from the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities and Think College will discuss college living, employment, and legal options for attendees. The event is supported by organizations including SVDSN, DSCBA, T21RS, and The Matthew Foundation.
For those unable to attend in person, video recordings are available for $129. Presentations from experts like Rafael Pelayo from Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences Medicine and Caroline Okorie from Stanford School of Medicine can be downloaded online.
Dr. Noemi Spinazzi from UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Down Syndrome clinic and Teresa Unnerstall, author of “A New Course: A Mother’s Journey Navigating Down Syndrome And Autism,” also contributed their expertise.
The Matthew Foundation emphasizes its mission to improve the lives of individuals with Down syndrome through research-driven treatments. Their website offers an extensive collection of references valuable to families dealing with Down syndrome-related challenges.
Additionally, COVID-19 Q&A documents endorsed by various U.S. Down syndrome organizations are available to support affected families.
