Five Stanford undergraduates have been named 2024 Goldwater Scholars, a prestigious national award that recognizes outstanding students in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
Among the recipients are Julie Chen, Cyrus Hajian, Jaeah Kim, Andrei Mandelshtam, and Sidra Xu, who were selected from a pool of 1,353 nominees. This year's winners bring Stanford's total count of Goldwater Scholars to 109 since the inception of the scholarship in 1989.
Cyrus Hajian, one of the awardees, expressed the significance of the recognition, stating, "As someone who transferred to Stanford from a community college, being recognized as a Goldwater Scholar is incredibly meaningful to me." Hajian emphasized the collective support of mentors and peers in achieving this milestone, aiming to break barriers as a nontraditional student from an underrepresented background.
Julie Chen, another recipient, highlighted the importance of mentorship and support on her journey, saying, "[This is an] opportunity to reflect on all the people who have helped, mentored, and supported me." Chen expressed gratitude towards her parents and scientific mentors for guiding her towards a career in research and instilling a love for science.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, established in honor of the late U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, aims to foster the next generation of research scientists and leaders in STEM fields. The scholarship provides financial support to Goldwater Scholars to cover tuition, fees, books, and living expenses.
The 2024 Goldwater Scholarship winners from Stanford University have diverse academic interests and career aspirations. Julie Chen, a junior, aims to pursue a PhD in biology, while Cyrus Hajian, a transfer student, plans to combine medical research with his studies as a physician scientist. Jaeah Kim, Andrei Mandelshtam, and Sidra Xu also have ambitious plans to contribute to the fields of biomedical engineering, mathematics, and developmental genomics, respectively.
These five exceptional undergraduates exemplify Stanford's commitment to fostering excellence in research and innovation, paving the way for future leaders in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
