“Part of my job is to fight in the halls of Congress on behalf of my constituents – the other is to keep them informed every step of the way,” said Congressman Sherman. “That’s why I continue to host Town Halls as they allow me to instantly connect and engage with thousands - helping them stay updated, while helping me better understand how to effectively champion our community’s values in Washington.”
As the nation edges closer to the debt ceiling cliff, Sherman started the event by providing updates on efforts to avoid a national debt default while working to prevent Republicans from gutting essential programs such as Social Security and Medicare. As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, Sherman also spent time in his opening remarks to discuss the recent bank failures, and the steps being taken to bolster key protections, hold those responsible accountable and restore confidence in the American banking system.
Thousands of eager constituents joined the event to pose questions or passionately relay their thoughts on a vast array of local and national matters. Some asked Sherman how the consequences of a potential national debt default would directly affect them, while others wanted to know what Sherman and his colleagues were doing to address other pressing issues –stopping gun violence, protecting reproductive healthcare rights and combating an extreme Republican Congressional agenda.
Congressman Sherman was joined by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park who represents the residents of Council District 11. Councilwoman Park introduced herself and her district communities to the thousands of participants on the line and spoke on several key policy priorities: keeping CD11 communities safe, revitalizing the local economy, improving the community’s infrastructure, and addressing homelessness. Councilwoman Park closed her remarks by detailing the services her team stands ready to provide for residents in need.
During the Telephone Town Hall, Sherman requested input from residents by asking a series of survey questions about their thoughts on the many critical issues facing our nation. The results of the survey questions are as follows:
