WASHINGTON, DCU.S. Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (CA-16) issued the following statement after today’s vote to prevent an unprecedented default on our nation’s debt.

“Today, I’m relieved for the American people because the House passed legislation to suspend the debt ceiling for two years. Economists agree that a default would have irreversible repercussions for the global financial system and push our economy into recession.

I voted for the bill because the following were all 100% protected:

  • Social Security;
  • Medicare;
  • Medicaid;
  • The CHIPS and Science Act;
  • The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act;
  • Inflation Reduction Act; and
  • Veterans’ medical care, including the PACT Act to provide care to veterans exposed to toxic substances during their service.
The bill ensures we will continue to fund vital programs, and deep cuts to veterans’ services, law enforcement, public safety, clean energy, and education that would have hurt families and raised costs in our Congressional District were avoided.

Republicans held the global economy and our country’s full faith and credit hostage to partisan demands, and this bill rejects their most devastating proposals. In divided government, compromises must be made.”
