PALO ALTO, Calif. — Representative Anna G. Eshoo (CA-16) announced today the winners of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. The winning entry for 2023 is Entangled by student artist Suzy Kim of Leigh High School. Mother and Child by Rhea Jain of Mountain View High School is the Second Place entry, and the Third Place entry is Tender Trust by Kiara Zhou of Los Gatos High School.

Student artists who received Honorable Mentions are: Annie Xu of Los Altos High School for Flagfish Soiree; Sophia Ou of Hongyun Art for Milky Way; and Julia Mao of Los Altos High School for Courage Within.

Judging the entries was done by an independent panel of members of the art community. This year’s panel included distinguished local artists Kit Colman of Woodside, Meredith Forster of Mountain View, and Summer Lee of Pacifica.

“I’m exceedingly proud of the exceptional works of art produced by the student artists in our Congressional District,” Eshoo said. “Student artists have stepped up and furthered their creative pursuits despite the pandemic. Congratulations to Suzy Kim and every student who has embraced art to express themselves.”

Congresswoman Eshoo announced the winners at a virtual reception she hosted on Thursday, May 4th to honor the 59 student artists who submitted their work. A recording of the event has been uploaded to Congresswoman Eshoo’s Facebook profile, where a full album of submitted artwork is viewable.

About the Competition

Since 1982, the Congressional Institute has hosted an annual visual art competition for high school students to recognize artistic talent throughout the nation. Attracting almost 700,000 participants nationwide to date, the competition calls for submissions of paintings, drawings, collages, photographs and computer-generated art.

The winning artwork from each congressional district is exhibited in the U.S. Capitol for a year, and the winner receives two round-trip tickets to Washington D.C. for the annual awards ceremony and launch of the exhibition courtesy of Southwest Airlines.
