Nearly 300 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers recently gathered at Stanford University for an event focused on career paths outside academia. Known as PhD Pathways, this program is now in its 10th year of operation and was established to guide doctoral students and postdocs toward careers in various industries, including the arts, artificial intelligence, and data science.
Arne Bakker, who was instrumental in founding PhD Pathways, observed a crucial gap in career resources for PhD students and postdocs, particularly for those considering non-academic roles. Bakker, now with the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, stated that launching PhD Pathways was a “deliberate” initiative to provide networking opportunities and exposure to diverse career paths.
Michele Rasmussen, vice provost for student affairs, emphasized the program’s impact, noting that for a decade it has empowered students with connections and resources to pursue careers that align with their skills and interests. The event promotes community interaction, allowing participants to learn from PhD alumni who have transitioned to various careers successfully.
Chris Golde, an organizer and assistant director of career coaching and education for PhDs and postdocs, highlighted the program’s role in expanding the career perspectives of attendees. The event features interactive case studies, workshops, and panels across different fields, enabling participants to connect with peers and explore new professional avenues.
PhD Pathways collaborates with several Stanford entities like the VPGE, OPA, the Graduate School of Education, and BioSci Careers. Sal Cipriano, associate director of career coaching and education, praised the event for creating a space where attendees can access wide-ranging career possibilities, while PhD alumni can influence the professional journeys of others.
PhD Pathways continues its mission to broaden the career aspirations of PhD students and postdocs, adapting and refining its offerings based on participant feedback.
