Stanford University’s wrestling team narrowly lost to North Carolina State University on Friday at Maples Pavilion, with the final score 21-20 in favor of NC State. The meet was closely contested, as both teams won five bouts each, but bonus points proved decisive for the Wolfpack.
Nico Provo delivered a standout performance for Stanford by defeating defending national champion Vincent Robinson in overtime at 125 pounds. “Provo’s win at 125 pounds over top-ranked Vincent Robinson gave the Cardinal a chance to win the dual with one bout remaining,” according to the release. Despite this effort, Stanford could not secure enough bonus points in the final matches.
Tyler Knox, ranked seventh nationally, earned a 6-3 victory over Troy Hohman at 133 pounds but did not achieve bonus points that might have shifted the overall result. “No. 7 Tyler Knox defeated No. 33 Troy Hohman, 6-3, at 133 pounds but was unable to register bonus points as the Wolfpack held on for the win,” said officials.
Daniel Cardenas opened scoring for Stanford with a technical fall against Brogan Tucker at 157 pounds. This marked his third consecutive technical fall and increased his season record to ten wins and three losses. Seven of those victories were achieved through technical falls.
Abraham Wojcikiewicz came from behind to defeat Don Cates at 184 pounds, marking his second straight win and tenth of the season. Angelo Posada followed up with a first-period pin against Patrick Brophy at 197 pounds—his fourth pin this year and more than any other Stanford wrestler so far this season.
Stanford now holds an overall record of three wins and five losses (1-1 ACC), while NC State improves to ten wins and three losses (2-0 ACC). Next week, Stanford will continue its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with away matches against Virginia Tech on January 23 and Virginia on January 24.
The full list of results included notable performances from both teams across all weight classes.
