No. 22 Stanford lost 22-14 to No. 12 Virginia Tech in its first Atlantic Coast Conference road dual of the season on Friday at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Stanford, now with a record of 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the ACC, won four out of ten bouts against Virginia Tech (7-2, 2-0 ACC). Daniel Cardenas and Angelo Posada each recorded major decisions for Stanford.
The Cardinal fell behind early by seven points before redshirt freshman Jack Consiglio, ranked No. 18 nationally at 141 pounds, secured the team’s first points with a narrow decision over Tom Crook. “Consiglio registered a reversal to start the third which proved to be the difference in the bout.” With this win, Consiglio’s season record stands at nine wins and five losses.
Cardenas narrowed Virginia Tech’s lead after winning an 11-2 major decision over Ethen Miller at 157 pounds. According to the team report: “Ranked 10th in the country, the redshirt junior notched three takedowns, an escape and the riding time point in his 10th bonus-point win of the season.” His overall record improved to eleven wins and three losses.
Abraham Wojcikiewicz added another victory for Stanford at 184 pounds by defeating Jaden Bullock with a late takedown. “Wojcikiewicz is now 11-9 overall.”
Posada gave Stanford another boost with his highest-ranked win so far—a major decision over Sonny Sasso at 197 pounds. The statement read: “It is the highest-ranked win for the true freshman, who improves to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in duals.”
Stanford will continue its road trip on Saturday with a match against Virginia scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific Time on ACCNX.
