Stanford wrestling defeats Virginia in ACC matchup

Stanford University’s wrestling team secured a 31-9 victory over the University of Virginia on Saturday at the Aquatics & Fitness Center in Charlottesville. The Cardinal, ranked No. 22 nationally, won eight out of ten bouts during the dual meet.

With this result, Stanford’s overall record stands at 4-6 and 2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) competition. This marks their first win in Charlottesville and improves their all-time record against Virginia to 2-1.

The match began at 165 pounds with redshirt freshman EJ Parco earning his seventh win of the season by defeating Nick Sanko with an 8-3 decision. At 184 pounds, redshirt sophomore Abraham Wojcikiewicz achieved a major decision over Griffin Gammell, winning 9-1 for his first major decision of the season.

True freshman Angelo Posada followed with a first-period fall against Steven Burrell Jr., bringing his total to seven falls this year and placing him among the top ten nationally for falls at his weight class. He now holds a record of 12-4 overall and is 7-2 in duals.

No. 12-ranked Nico Provo extended Stanford’s lead by securing a 5-2 decision over No. 23 Keyveon Roller at 125 pounds, marking his fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.

At 133 pounds, No. 7 Tyler Knox recorded a victory over No. 33 Marlon Yarbrough with a score of 9-4, improving his duals record to seven wins and two losses this season.

Redshirt freshman Jack Consiglio, ranked No.18 nationally at 141 pounds, earned his third major decision of the year by defeating Gable Porter with a score of 9-1 for his tenth win this season.

No.9 Aden Valencia came from behind to defeat Wynton Denkins at 149 pounds by a score of 6-2, giving Stanford further advantage in the dual meet standings.

Redshirt junior Daniel Cardenas concluded the event with a technical fall over No.33 Colton Washleski at157 pounds, finishing with a score of21-6 after securing a takedown as time expired.Cardenas has now achieved eight technical falls this season—placing him among national leaders—and eleven out of twelve wins have come via bonus points.

Stanford will return home next week to host Cal Poly on Friday evening at Burnham Pavilion.
