Stanford University’s men’s wrestling team opened its Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) season with a 35-10 victory over Duke at Maples Pavilion on Friday. The Cardinal, ranked No. 14 nationally, won seven out of ten bouts against the Blue Devils, marking their highest team score in a dual meet this season.
Freshman Edwin Sierra began the meet for Stanford at 125 pounds by defeating Spencer von Savoye with a technical fall, scoring 19-4 in six minutes and eighteen seconds. Sierra achieved five takedowns and three near-fall points to improve his dual record to 2-1.
At 133 pounds, Tyler Knox, ranked seventh nationally, secured his first pin of the season by defeating Riley Rowan in four minutes and fifty-five seconds. Knox now holds a 5-1 record in duals and is 7-3 overall.
Jack Consiglio, a redshirt freshman ranked No. 17 at 141 pounds, earned a decision win over Raymond Adams with a final score of 5-0. Consiglio’s season record now stands at 8-4.
Redshirt junior Daniel Cardenas dominated his match at 157 pounds against Logan Fite with a technical fall of 17-2 in just one minute and thirty-five seconds. Cardenas is currently ranked ninth nationally and has six technical falls this season with an overall record of 9-3.
In the higher weight classes, Abraham Wojcikiewicz scored his first technical fall of the year at 184 pounds by defeating David Hussey with a score of 17-2 in six minutes and seventeen seconds. Wojcikiewicz’s overall record improved to 9-9.
True freshman Angelo Posada finished Stanford’s scoring efforts at 197 pounds by earning a technical fall over Owen McGrory with a score of 21-5 in five minutes and forty-six seconds. Ranked nineteenth nationally, Posada is now at nine wins and four losses for the season.
The remaining matches saw Duke pick up victories at the heavier weights: Dylan Ross won by major decision over Lain Yapoujian (149), Aidan Wallace defeated Collin Guffey (174), EJ Parco claimed victory by forfeit (165), and Connor Barket edged out Luke Duthie (285).
Stanford will continue its home stand next week when it hosts No. 6 NC State on Friday, January 16th at Maples Pavilion.
