Stanford women’s tennis posts strong results at Cal Winter Invitational

Six members of the Stanford Cardinal women’s tennis team competed at the Cal Winter Invitational in Berkeley, California, concluding their matches on Saturday. Over two days, the group achieved an 8-2 record in singles play.

Freshman Tianmei Wang secured a significant win on Friday by defeating 63rd-ranked Naomi Xu from California in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Sein Myoung and Emma Sun also earned victories that afternoon against Cal Poly opponents. Myoung beat Alexandra Ozerets 6-2, 6-2, while Sun won over Olivia Mlouk with a score of 6-3, 6-0.

On Saturday, Caroline Driscoll joined the singles lineup and claimed a ranked victory over Xu in three sets: 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Driscoll now holds a record of three wins and one loss in three-set matches this season and is nine wins to five losses overall for her career.

Wang added another win by beating Sofia Daryaie from Saint Mary’s College with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Monika Ekstrand also defeated Ozerets (6-2, 7-5), while Myoung overcame Kennedy Buntrock from Cal Poly (4-6, 6-1, 6-3). Sun rounded out the singles victories with a win against Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako from Cal Poly (6-4, 6-1).

In doubles action on Saturday, Stanford pairs collected three wins: Myoung/Sun defeated Olivia Mlouk/Anushree Shekhera (Cal Poly) 6-3; Driscoll/Ekstrand bested Sofia Daryaie/Iman Khan (Saint Mary’s) by a score of 6-1; Shaffer/Wang overcame Tiana Fox/Sophie Stanton (Saint Mary’s) with a scoreline of 6-3. The same pairs lost their other doubles matches later that day.

Stanford will return to dual-match competition when it travels to Norman, Oklahoma to face Yale during the opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday, January 23 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time/noon Central Time.
