Stanford University’s women’s soccer team secured a 3-0 win over San Diego State on Thursday night at Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal, ranked No. 2 nationally, scored all three goals in the first 18 minutes of play.
With this victory, Stanford improved its season record to 3-0. San Diego State fell to 1-2 after the loss.
Senior Allie Montoya scored for the third consecutive match, finding the net in the 18th minute to complete Stanford’s scoring for the evening. Earlier in the game, Montoya assisted on Stanford’s opening goal in the 13th minute by delivering a pass to sophomore Charlotte Kohler, who finished with her first goal of the season.
Stanford quickly extended its lead just over a minute later when Andrea Kitahata capitalized on a loose ball following a blocked shot from Kohler. Kitahata scored with her first touch for her second goal in as many matches.
Three different goalkeepers played for Stanford during the match. Freshman Caroline Birkel started and made one save during the first half. Sophomore Kaiya Jota began the second half before junior Alyssa Savig entered for the final 14 minutes and recorded one save.
Stanford will continue its five-match homestand on Sunday against Saint Mary’s at Cagan Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
“Montoya also factored into the opener for the Cardinal in the 13th minute, one-timing a pass to sophomore Charlotte Kohler who paced her volley perfectly before unleashing a shot inside the far post for her first goal of the season.”
“Stanford doubled its lead to 2-0 just over a minute after Kohler’s goal when Andrea Kitahata had a ball trickle out to her off a blocked shot from Kohler. The redshirt senior read the spin of the ball and blasted her first touch past the outstretched dive of San Diego State goalkeeper Kailey Carlen for her second goal in as many matches.”
“All three goalkeepers got minutes in the victory for the Cardinal, with freshman Caroline Birkel working the first 45 minutes of the clean sheet while making one save. Sophomore Kaiya Jota started the second half before being replaced by junior Alyssa Savig for the final 14 minutes that included one save.”
Stanford will look to maintain its unbeaten start as it continues its early-season homestand.
