Stanford University’s women’s soccer team secured a 4-1 win over Saint Mary’s on Sunday at Cagan Stadium, maintaining an undefeated record at 4-0 this season. The Gaels fell to 0-1-1.
Junior Joelle Jung played a key role in the match, scoring once and assisting twice. Stanford took an early lead in the third minute when redshirt senior Andrea Kitahata advanced down the end line and passed back to Jung, who scored with a right-footed shot.
Charlotte Kohler extended Stanford’s advantage in the 22nd minute. After exchanging passes with Jung, Kohler found herself one-on-one with Saint Mary’s goalkeeper Kate Plachy and finished at the near post.
Saint Mary’s responded after halftime with Brooklyn Smith scoring in the 52nd minute. However, Stanford quickly regained momentum three minutes later when Jasmine Aikey converted a through ball from Jung for her third goal of the year.
Allie Montoya added Stanford’s fourth goal in the 79th minute after capitalizing on a rebound from Jaden Thomas’ shot that was initially saved by Plachy but not controlled.
Freshman Caroline Birkel played the full match as Stanford’s goalkeeper, making three saves. Plachy made seven saves for Saint Mary’s but allowed four goals.
Stanford will complete its five-match homestand on Thursday against Arizona at Cagan Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
