Stanford University’s track and field team recorded five event wins and multiple top performances at the UW Preview meet held at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle. The team saw new records and several athletes moving up in Stanford’s all-time rankings.
Alyssa Jones set a meet record in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.91 meters, which was also a personal best. This result keeps her as the second-best indoor high jumper in Stanford program history.
Juliette Whittaker won the women’s 1000m race with a time of 2:37.54, setting a new school record for the event. Her performance ranks as the second-fastest all-conditions mark nationally this season. Zane Bergen broke his own school record in the men’s 1000m with a time of 2:18.98, maintaining his status as Stanford’s top performer indoors for that distance.
Sophia Kennedy finished fifth in the women’s mile with a time of 4:32.13, making her fifth on Stanford’s historical list for that event.
In the women’s 600m, Madison Shults led three Cardinal runners who posted times among Stanford’s indoor Top 10 marks. Shults won with a time of 1:29.37 (third all-time), while Olivia Cieslak (1:30.76) and Amelia Everett (1:31.77) ranked sixth and tenth respectively.
Sprinter-jumper Xavier Drumgoole posted a time of 6.85 seconds in the men’s 60m final—seventh-best ever by a Stanford athlete indoors—and took second place in the long jump at 7.31 meters.
Alaysia Oakes placed third in the women’s 60m before winning the long jump with a leap of 6.01 meters; Elena Cooper finished second at 5.77 meters.
In distance events, Leo Young led three Cardinal runners to finish third through fifth place in the men’s 3000m with times under eight minutes; Hanne Thomsen and Julia Flynn achieved personal bests and top-five finishes in the women’s race over that distance.
Stanford will continue its season next weekend at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational hosted by University of New Mexico from January 23 to January 24.
“Alyssa Jones delivered the marquee moment of the weekend in the women’s high jump, as The Bowerman Watch List honoree set a new meet record with a 1.91m, setting a new career best and improving on her previous Stanford Top 10 mark,” according to event organizers.
“On the track, Juliette Whittaker earned a statement win in the women’s 1000m, battling down the stretch with Washington’s Chloe Foerster before ultimately crossing the line at 2:37.54,” stated organizers about Whittaker’s performance.
