Stanford track and field began its outdoor season at the Cal Invitational, held at Edwards Stadium, with three event victories and a new program top-10 mark, according to a statement released on Mar. 21.
The results highlight the team’s strong start to the spring competition schedule. Tess Stapleton made her career debut in the 400-meter hurdles by winning the event with a time of 58.66 seconds, making her the fifth-best performer in Stanford history for that discipline. Her performance led a sweep of the podium for Stanford, as Diane Richard finished second (1:00.26) and Addie Pendergast placed third (1:01.90).
On the men’s side, Ryce Reynolds won his own 400-meter hurdles race with a time of 52.58 seconds while teammate Joseph Bailey took third place in that event with a finish of 53.48 seconds.
In field events, Emma Sralla secured victory in her season debut by winning the women’s discus throw with a distance of 51.18 meters (167 feet, 11 inches). Julia Lemmon contributed to Stanford’s success by finishing third in discus (48.18 meters) and also earning bronze in shot put (14.66 meters/48 feet, one-and-a-quarter inches). Abbey Moody added another podium finish for Stanford by placing third in women’s javelin with an effort of 40.88 meters.
Other notable performances included Mason McKhann’s third-place result in men’s weight throw (58.59 meters) and Aidan McFarlane finishing third in men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.14 seconds.
Stanford is scheduled to continue its outdoor campaign by hosting its first home meet of the season at Cobb Track & Angell Field during the Stanford Invitational on April 3-4.
