Stanford lost to Duke on Mar. 29 after a nine-run seventh inning by the Blue Devils led to a 17-14 walk-off win in Durham, North Carolina. The defeat ended Stanford’s seven-game road trip with a record of five wins and two losses, bringing their season tally to 20-10 and their conference record to 9-6.
The game saw strong offensive performances from both teams, with Joie Economides leading Stanford by collecting three hits and four runs batted in. Stanford took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning through timely hitting and patience at the plate. River Mahler contributed an RBI single before Addyson Sheppard and Economides drew walks that brought in additional runs.
Duke responded quickly, tying the game at four with home runs in the second inning. Stanford answered back with another four-run frame in the fourth, highlighted by bases-loaded opportunities and key hits from Jade Berry and Mahler. Economides added a two-RBI single that put Stanford ahead.
The lead shifted several times throughout the game as both teams continued to score. Mahler hit her first home run of the season in the sixth inning, giving her six RBIs for the series against Duke. In the seventh inning, Kyra Chan hit a two-run homer while pinch hitter Izzy Cacatian drove in another run as part of a surge that extended Stanford’s advantage to 14-8 heading into Duke’s final at-bat.
However, Duke rallied for nine runs on five hits during their last turn at bat—eight of those runs were earned—securing a comeback victory over Stanford.
Stanford will return home next weekend for Cardinal Classic II at Stanford Softball Stadium starting Thursday, April 2 against No. 25 Washington. The game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., with tickets available online and streaming provided via ACC Network Extra.
