Donna Robertson, a dedicated member of Stanford University’s staff, passed away on April 13 at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. Her career in the Office of Development spanned over three decades and saw her engage with numerous donors and dignitaries across four presidential tenures.
John L. Hennessy, who served as Stanford’s president from 2000 to 2016, expressed his admiration for Robertson: “Everybody loved Donna – staff, faculty, alumni, and Stanford friends. When Donna planned an event, she wanted to be sure that the experience would be memorable for everyone. She was truly dedicated to Stanford and that was evident in everything she did.”
Robertson arrived in Palo Alto in 1965 when her husband began his graduate studies at Stanford. Initially a grade school teacher, she transitioned into development work after impressing university officials with her calligraphy skills at a dinner event. Her responsibilities quickly expanded to include overseeing logistics for major events such as the inauguration of President Donald Kennedy in 1980.
During the Centennial Campaign from 1987 to 1992, Robertson played a key role in organizing off-campus events for alumni and friends. Peter Bing praised her contributions: “Helen and I always felt honored to work with Donna for many years when she was the linchpin of the Office of Development.”
Gerhard Casper, president from 1992 to 2000, also relied heavily on Robertson’s expertise: “Especially for a new president, Donna’s sense of what was important and appropriate was indispensable.”
Throughout her career, Robertson interacted with prominent figures including Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and British royalty during their visits to Stanford. Her knack for creating personalized gifts is remembered fondly by those who worked closely with her.
Margarita Vallin spoke highly of Robertson’s leadership style: “Donna led with grace, humility, and most of all, with her heart… She left a lasting impact on all of us and will never be forgotten.”
Robertson is survived by her husband Channing Robertson; two children Jodie Craig and Jesse Robertson; and four grandchildren.
