Stanford University announced on Apr. 9 that its sailing team will compete in the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference (PCCSC) Women’s Team Race and Women’s Fleet Race championships this weekend. The Cardinal is also scheduled to participate in the PCCSC Open Fleet Race Championship and the Thompson Trophy Open Team Race.
These upcoming events are significant as Stanford continues a strong season, aiming to add more titles to an already successful year. Last weekend, the Cardinal won both the PCCSC Open Team Race Championship and the Tulane Women’s Team Race Invite.
According to recent rankings, Stanford’s women’s sailing team holds the top spot nationally in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) standings, while its coed squad is ranked second. The team has finished among the top three in 33 out of 36 regattas so far this season, with 22 first-place finishes.
During the previous academic year, Stanford captured three national titles and earned its second Leonard M. Fowle Trophy, marking what it describes as “the most successful season in program history.” The program now claims eight national championships—five women’s and three coed—with seven of those coming within the last three seasons under head coach Chris Klevan.
Several returning athletes have received individual honors following last year’s achievements. Vanessa Lahrkamp was unanimously named Quantum Women’s Sailor of the Year for a second consecutive time; Alice Schmid received recognition as Mitchell M. Brindley Crew of the Year; Thomas Sitzmann was a finalist for Open Sailor of the Year; and eight Stanford sailors were named ICSA All-Americans across various categories.
The team looks to continue its momentum at this weekend’s championship events.
