Stanford University’s men’s soccer team completed its preseason with a 1-0 exhibition win over Cal Poly at Cagan Stadium on Saturday night. The match remained scoreless through the first half, with both teams combining for only four scoring opportunities. Stanford goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly made a save on a long-range attempt during this period.

After halftime, Stanford increased its offensive efforts, taking five shots in the first ten minutes of the second half. The decisive moment came in the 49th minute when Alfonso Tenconi-Gradillas’ header was deflected by Cal Poly’s goalkeeper and Shane De Flores scored from close range. This marked De Flores’ third goal of the preseason.

Stanford maintained pressure throughout the rest of the game, forcing four saves from Cal Poly in the second half. The Cardinal defense prevented any late equalizer attempts to secure the win.

Head coach Jeremy Gunn commented on the performance and development seen during preseason play: “That was a really tough test today. Obviously, I’ve worked with Oige [Kennedy] for many years and they have a very strong team,” said Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer Jeremy Gunn. “The first half was two teams canceling each other out, both being really solid. Then in the second half, it was truly impressive how our team opened the game up a bit, managed to get on top and stay on top the rest of the way.”

Gunn also highlighted contributions from returning players and freshmen: “I think the returning players have been doing exceptionally well, and then it’s been really exciting to see the contributions from the freshman,” said Gunn “I thought tonight was especially good for the younger players. It’s a night game, things are a bit more hurried, they were put under a bit more pressure and they showed some great moments of composure.”

A total of 25 different Stanford players participated during preseason matches.

Stanford will begin its regular season at home against Sacramento State on August 21 at 3 p.m. PT, with coverage available on ACC Network Extra. Tickets for Thursday’s contest and all ten home matches at Cagan Stadium are currently available.
