Stanford University’s men’s tennis team defeated No. 3 Wake Forest 4-3 on April 3 in the opening match at the newly named Arrillaga Tennis Center.
The victory marks Stanford’s highest-ranked win of the season and took place during the program’s first match at its renovated home facility, previously known as Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The result is significant for both teams, as Wake Forest entered the contest as defending NCAA champions.
Freshman Jagger Leach secured the deciding point for No. 25 Stanford by coming back from a third-set deficit to win his singles match against Joaquin Guilleme. Leach trailed 5-2 in the final set before winning five straight games, clinching a dramatic victory with scores of 6-4, 6-7 (2), and 7-6 (4).
Wake Forest initially took a lead after claiming the doubles point and winning two early singles matches through Luca Pow and DK Suresh Ekambaram. However, Stanford responded with victories from Alex Razeghi, Alex Chang, and Hudson Rivera to tie the overall score at three points each.
The match was played before an enthusiastic crowd that supported Stanford throughout nearly four hours of competition. Prior to play, a ceremony marked the dedication of the Arrillaga Tennis Center—now featuring twelve courts, over twelve thousand square feet of team space, and seating for more than one thousand spectators—following its renaming from Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Stanford will next host NC State on Sunday, April 5 in its final regular season home match.
