Stanford University’s men’s soccer team is set to face Saint Mary’s Gaels on Tuesday evening at Cagan Stadium, continuing a rivalry that has spanned nearly five decades. The Cardinal holds a 25-6-3 all-time record against the Gaels and has won the last three meetings under head coach Jeremy Gunn.
Jeremy Gunn, who serves as the Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer, commented after Stanford’s recent 1-0 loss to Louisville: “I was truly proud of how we played today, but also incredibly frustrated. We started the game on the front foot and, in every category apart from the one that decides the result, we were the better team. Sometimes the players execute magnificently and you just get sucker punched.” In that match, Zach Bohane and Jack Pymm led Stanford with four attacks each, while Alex Chow had two shots on goal.
Stanford rebounded from that defeat with a 1-0 win over UC Davis, securing its first shutout of the season. Jude Stone scored in the 76th minute, and goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly made key saves late in the match to preserve the victory.
Earlier in the season, Stanford overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Santa Clara 2-1 on the road. Will Cleary scored off an Alex Chow corner kick to tie the match before Tomo Allen netted his first collegiate goal for the go-ahead score.
Four freshmen—Jack Pymm, Tomo Allen, Jude Stone, and Joshua Partal—have already contributed offensively this season. This marks the first time since 2022 that at least three true freshmen have scored for Stanford in a single season.
Through five matches in 2025, Stanford has outperformed opponents statistically across multiple categories including goals (10-4), shots (94-36), assists (8-4), and corner kicks (24-15). Seven different players have scored so far this year.
The Cardinal began their season with three home wins over Sacramento State, Denver, and UC Davis after an undefeated preseason. Head coach Jeremy Gunn is among only four coaches to win NCAA titles in both Division I and II men’s soccer. He has led Stanford to three national championships and holds a career record of 349-114-83 over 26 seasons.
New additions to Stanford’s coaching staff include Drew Hutchins—a former Cardinal player returning after coaching at NC State—and Woo Jeon from Cal Poly.
Eight returning players made at least 15 starts last season for Stanford. Key returners include leading scorers Zach Bohane and Shane De Flores along with goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly.
Stanford boasts a strong home record since 1973 and continues to recruit highly ranked classes; its current freshman group was rated No. 2 nationally by TopDrawerSoccer.
Senior midfielder Zach Bohane was named to both ACC Preseason Watch List and TopDrawerSoccer’s Preseason Best XI Second Team. He led Stanford in several offensive categories last year and earned First Team All-ACC honors.
In 2024, Stanford finished with a record of 9-5-6 and reached its 22nd NCAA postseason appearance under Coach Gunn’s leadership. The team advanced past UC Santa Barbara on penalties before being eliminated by Ohio State following another penalty shootout.
Academically, Stanford received recognition from United Soccer Coaches for having a team GPA of 3.74—the highest among Division-I award winners—and placed fifteen student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic Team last year.
Now entering its second ACC season, Stanford was picked fifth in this year’s conference preseason poll after going 3-2-3 during its inaugural campaign which included wins over Clemson, Notre Dame, and Virginia.
The Atlantic Coast Conference leads all conferences with eight programs having won NCAA men’s soccer championships; six active ACC head coaches have won Division I national titles including Jeremy Gunn.
Stanford is one of two programs ever to win three consecutive NCAA men’s soccer titles (2015–17) alongside Virginia (1991–94). The program has appeared in seven College Cups since its inception and remains among college athletics’ most decorated institutions for both team and individual championships across sports disciplines.
Saint Mary’s enters Tuesday’s match seeking its first win of the season after two losses followed by draws against Kansas City and UC Davis. T.J. Dilley and Bastian Toelhoej are among their top scorers this year.
Tuesday’s non-conference contest will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra at 8 a.m. PT with Alejandro Flores and Greg Wong providing commentary. Following this match-up against Saint Mary’s, Stanford will play Syracuse away on September 13 before visiting San Jose State on September 17; they return home September 21 for their first conference game against Virginia Tech.
