Stanford men’s soccer ended its season after a 1-0 defeat to Washington in the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday. The decisive goal came in the 88th minute, eliminating Stanford from the tournament.
“We feel sick,” said Jeremy Gunn, the Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer. “We started the game emphatically. We were so far on top, but we simply just needed to finish our chances. We allowed them to regroup, and it only took one good chance to end the season.”
Stanford began the match with strong momentum, outshooting Washington 14–2 in the first half and creating several scoring opportunities. In the 30th minute, Liam Doyle scored off a rebound from Palmer Bank’s shot, but an offside call overturned the goal after a review.
Later in the first half, another attempt by Doyle was stopped near the goal line, keeping both teams scoreless at halftime.
Washington improved in the second half as both teams exchanged attacks. With less than three minutes left in regulation, Charlie Kosakoff scored for Washington with a header past Stanford goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly.
Stanford tried to equalize before time expired but was unable to find a goal. The team concluded its season with a record of 14 wins, four losses, and three draws. This marked Stanford’s 23rd appearance in postseason play for men’s soccer.
