Stanford University’s men’s gymnastics team began its season with a victory over the University of California at Haas Pavilion on Friday. The Cardinal, ranked third nationally, won six event titles and finished with a score of 320.100 to California’s 309.700.
Senior Nick Kuebler led Stanford by securing two event wins in his first meet since the 2024 season. He posted a leading score of 14.000 on floor exercise, an event where he previously won the national title in 2023. Kuebler also scored 13.900 to win still rings and placed fifth on high bar with a score of 13.250.
David Shamah contributed two event victories for Stanford, including a winning score of 13.750 on parallel bars. Shamah also achieved podium finishes on pommel horse (13.750) and floor exercise (13.700), earning him the all-around title with a cumulative score of 79.150.
Kiran Mandava and Wade Nelson each set career highs with scores of 14.200 to win pommel horse and vault, respectively. Zach Green added another apparatus win for Stanford by scoring 14.100 on high bar.
Other notable performances included Cooper Kim’s second-place finishes on floor (13.900) and high bar (13.600), Marcus Kushner’s silver medal performance on pommel horse (13.850), and Arun Chhetri’s second place on pommel horse (13.550).
Freshmen Deano Roberts and Jun Iwai made their collegiate debuts during the meet; Roberts finished third on rings with a score of 12.950, while Iwai placed fourth in both floor (13.600) and vault (14.00).
Stanford will compete next at the Rocky Mountain Open hosted by Air Force on January 17.
