The Stanford men’s rowing team will compete against Oregon State and Wisconsin on April 2 at the California Classic, which is co-hosted by Stanford and Cal.
The event is part of the team’s third weekend of racing this season. While the regatta spans both Saturday and Sunday, Stanford will participate only on Saturday, facing Oregon State in the morning and Wisconsin in the afternoon. The races will take place on the Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course.
Stanford, ranked No. 9 nationally, is scheduled to race No. 21 Oregon State in three events: first varsity eight at 9 a.m., second varsity eight at 9:40 a.m., and third varsity eight at 10:20 a.m. Later in the day, they will face No. 15 Wisconsin with races set for 2:10 p.m., 2:50 p.m., and 3:20 p.m.
Last weekend, Stanford placed fifth among top-10 teams during Sarasota’s Benderson Cup competition. The Cardinal raced against teams including No.1 Washington, No.3 Harvard, No.6 Brown, No.7 Northeastern, and No.10 Yale.
During that event in Sarasota two years ago, Stanford finished sixth overall as well as sixth in both first and second varsity eight races; this year’s first varsity eight improved to fourth place with a time of 5:53.37—less than one second behind Brown for third place (5:52.51). The second and third varsity eights both finished fifth ahead of Yale.
In its season opener at Redwood Shores Invitational on March 7, Stanford fielded a third varsity eight boat for the first time in seven years.
