Stanford men’s basketball ended its East Coast road trip with a 70-55 loss to No. 23 Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. The Cardinal now holds a 13-4 record overall and is 2-2 in the ACC.
Benny Gealer led Stanford’s offense, scoring 15 points, making three three-pointers, and contributing four rebounds along with a game-high three steals. Ebuka Okorie added 14 points and six rebounds. Eight different players scored for Stanford during the game.
Okorie reached a milestone by surpassing Tyrell Terry for fourth place in free throws made by a freshman in Stanford history. He joins Todd Lichti, John Revelli, and Brevin Knight as the only Cardinal freshmen to make at least 100 free throws in their first season.
Stanford’s defense limited Virginia to its lowest point total of the season. Virginia’s previous lowest home score was against Maryland on December 20.
The Cardinal took an early lead, with Gealer scoring five quick points to put Stanford ahead 7-4. Virginia responded and built a nine-point advantage midway through the first half. Stanford narrowed the gap with an 18-10 run but trailed at halftime, 41-34.
Oskar Giltay opened the second half with a basket and a foul shot for Stanford, but Virginia extended its lead as Stanford struggled offensively. The Cardinal finished strong with a late run but could not close the gap.
Stanford will next play at home against No. 17 North Carolina on Wednesday, January 14 at Maples Pavilion. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
