Ten photographs taken at Stanford University in 2025 capture key moments and achievements from the year. These images document a range of campus life, scientific research, athletic accomplishments, and notable events.

After Commencement ceremonies, the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band gave an unscheduled performance on stage. The campus also experienced a rare natural phenomenon when the Northern Lights were visible during a G4 geomagnetic storm; this event was photographed by postdoctoral scholar Mingming Tong.

Athletic achievement was highlighted by Khoi Young, class of 2025, who showcased his skills on the pommel horse. Young previously won individual gold at the 2023 Pan American Championships.

Scientific discoveries were also featured. Researchers observed that the sun glass frog is unique among terrestrial vertebrates for its transparency in adulthood. This trait allows scientists to study organ function and how the amphibian brain tracks time daily and seasonally.

Marine biologist Stephen Palumbi at Stanford continues his work on coral reef resilience to climate change, focusing on ocean warming and coral bleaching effects.

The Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance is working with Stanford Athletics to collect data from student-athletes to improve athletic performance. In one example, baseball player Toran O’Harran demonstrated explosive jumps as part of this research effort.

Stanford biochemist Lingyin Li’s laboratory is investigating a molecule with potential for cancer treatment as well as therapies for autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and age-related diseases.

Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky, class of 2020, returned to campus as Stanford’s Commencement speaker and was seen swimming laps during her visit.

Bioengineer Mark Skylar-Scott is pursuing research into 3D printing human hearts and other organs using cells from patients’ own bodies.

The Frost Amphitheater hosted Coldplay for two nights as part of their North American tour opener. Over these performances, the band played to a total audience of 86,000 fans.
