Five gymnasts from Stanford University participated in the 2025 Sokol Grand Prix in Brno, Czech Republic, over the weekend. The event featured 11 teams competing in mixed pairs, with eight pairs advancing to the second round and four reaching the final for podium placements.
David Shamah secured a gold medal with partner Vanesa Masova of Czechia. In the finals, Shamah scored 13.600 on parallel bars and previously achieved a top semifinal score of 12.750 on pommel horse. During qualifications, he posted routines of 12.600 on high bar and 13.650 on parallel bars.
Cooper Kim claimed silver alongside Sona Artamonova (Czechia). Kim scored a preliminary best with a 12.600 on vault and a 13.650 on high bar during qualifications, added a floor routine score of 13.200 in the semifinals, and finished with a vault score of 13.475 in the finals.
Junior Kiran Mandava and Ema Strakosova took third place after Mandava delivered a 13.550 pommel horse routine in the final round to secure their podium finish. He also contributed scores of 13.450 on parallel bars in the semifinals and had qualification routines of 13.100 on high bar and 11.500 on pommel horse.
Zach Green partnered with Alice Vlkova to reach the semifinals following qualification scores that included a 13.250 on floor exercise and a 13.650 on high bar; Green added a semifinal parallel bars routine scoring 12.700 before finishing fifth overall.
Marcus Pietarinen advanced to the semifinals as well, pairing with Slovakia’s Sara Surmanova to place eighth overall after earning qualification scores of 12.800 (still rings) and 13.100 (pommel horse), followed by a semifinal floor exercise score of 13.050.
The competition marked the first senior international appearance for Green, Kim, and Shamah at this level of gymnastics competition overseas.
According to event organizers, all five Stanford athletes will return home to prepare for their upcoming collegiate season beginning January 9 at the Cal Benefit Cup.
