Stanford University’s women’s field hockey team began its four-game homestand with a decisive 6-0 victory over Ball State at Varsity Field Hockey Turf on Thursday afternoon. Four different Stanford players contributed to the scoring, while goalkeepers Daisy Ford and Kendall Dowd combined efforts to secure a shutout.
Ball State started the match with early offensive pressure, outshooting Stanford 4-1 in the opening minutes. Ford made one save during this period, which turned out to be her only required stop for the day as Stanford’s defense tightened and Ball State struggled to generate further chances.
“I was not happy with the way we started, but I thought our emotional intelligence to be able to build through the remaining quarters was noteworthy,” said Susan Ewing York Director of Women’s Field Hockey head coach Roz Ellis.
Stanford shifted momentum late in the first quarter and dominated play through the second and third quarters, outshooting Ball State 14-1 during that stretch. Kate Nemec opened scoring five minutes into the second quarter by converting a loose ball inside the circle. Shortly after, Nadine Brenninkmeyer tipped in a shot from Mia Clark off a penalty corner, giving Stanford a 2-0 lead at halftime.
After halftime, Brenninkmeyer scored again midway through the third quarter off another penalty corner. Moments later, Liv Martin scored her first goal of the season following a turnover and quick attack, increasing Stanford’s lead to 4-0.
“We have been building so much of our forward momentum and the bravery and risk that individuals are taking to get up in the circle is exactly what we want to see,” Ellis said. “It also has to feel good for them and seeing the work they’ve put in pay off has to feel good.”
In the fourth quarter, Martin added her second goal on a rebound at the back post. Maroussia Walckiers then capitalized on another opportunity along the end line for Stanford’s final goal of the game.
Late in regulation, Ball State attempted to score but was denied by Dowd—making her first appearance this season—who stopped both shots she faced as time expired.
The Cardinal improved their record as they continue their homestand with three more games scheduled at home.
