Stanford’s women’s basketball team lost to Georgia Tech 74-52 in Atlanta on Sunday. Lara Somfai led Stanford with a career-high 19 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Despite her efforts, the Cardinal were unable to secure a lead at any point during the game.
The closest Stanford came was midway through the third quarter when Hailee Swain scored a driving layup to bring the score to 45-39. However, Georgia Tech responded with a 10-2 run to end the period, and Stanford did not get within single digits for the remainder of the contest.
Stanford struggled offensively throughout the game, shooting just 32.8 percent from the field—its third-worst performance this season. The team experienced several scoring droughts, including nearly six minutes without a basket in a second quarter where it scored only seven points. There was also a four-minute dry spell in the third quarter and no points scored in the final four minutes of play.
Georgia Tech entered the game ranked last in three-point shooting percentage in their conference but managed to make five three-pointers in the first quarter and finished with nine total—their second-highest mark of the season and most since November.
Stanford’s freshmen performed better than their upperclassmen, collectively shooting 43.6 percent (17-of-39) from the floor. The rest of the team combined for just 17.9 percent (5-of-28).
Somfai’s strong performance followed another notable outing at Pittsburgh where she had 15 points, 23 rebounds, and eight assists. Over Stanford’s recent road trip, she averaged 17 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists per game. Hailee Swain contributed ten points for her fifth straight double-digit scoring effort while Alexandra Eschmeyer added nine points and eight rebounds.
Stanford will next face Virginia Tech at home on Thursday, February 12 at 7 p.m.
