The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has announced the election of 120 new members, among them seven researchers from Stanford University. Election to the NAS is a recognition by peers for “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.” The academy plays a role in advising the U.S. government on science, engineering, and health policy.
Among those elected from Stanford are Shanhui Fan, who holds the Joseph and Hon Mai Goodman Professorship and is a professor of electrical engineering at the School of Engineering. Fan also serves as a senior fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy and is part of Stanford Bio-X.
David Grusky, another new member, is the Edward Ames Edmonds Professor of Economics and Sociology at the School of Humanities & Sciences (H&S). He directs the Center on Poverty and Inequality and is affiliated with several institutes including the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR).
Michelle Monje, recognized for her work in pediatric neuro-oncology, holds the Milan Gambhir Professorship in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology. She is a professor of pediatric neurology at Stanford Medicine and involved with multiple research institutes such as Bio-X and the Stanford Cancer Institute.
Jonathan Pritchard has been elected for his contributions in genetics. He is a professor at Stanford Medicine holding dual roles as Bing Professor of Population Studies and professor of biology in H&S.
Cecilia Ridgeway joins as an emerita faculty member being named Lucie Stern Professor Emerita of Social Sciences. She served as a professor emerita of sociology within H&S.
Kang Shen, who fills several roles including Frank Lee and Carol Hall Professorship in biology at H&S, has also been elected. Shen leads as director at Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute while maintaining affiliations with other departments like pathology in Stanford Medicine.
Lastly, Risa Wechsler’s election acknowledges her work across physics disciplines. As Humanities and Sciences Professor, she contributes to particle physics at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory where she directs Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology.
These appointments underscore significant contributions made by these scholars across diverse fields within scientific research.
