Stanford won a three-game series against Virginia Tech after scoring three runs in the tenth inning to secure a 6-3 victory on Sunday, March 29.
The win marks Stanford’s first series victory in Atlantic Coast Conference play and its second consecutive overall. The game was tied at 3-3 going into extra innings before freshman Teddy Tokheim delivered a two-run single, putting Stanford ahead. Sophomore Charlie Bates added another run with an RBI single, bringing the score to 6-3.
Bates finished the game with three hits out of six at-bats, while Tokheim went two-for-five. Senior Cort MacDonald started the rally in the tenth with an infield single. Freshman Brock Sell contributed with a ground-rule double that set up runners on second and third base. Virginia Tech intentionally walked Rintaro Sasaki before Tokheim’s key hit.
Senior Trevor Moore played a crucial role by escaping a bases-loaded situation in the ninth inning and pitching three scoreless innings to earn his fourth win of the season. The teams combined to leave thirty runners stranded during the game—Stanford left thirteen and Virginia Tech seventeen.
Luke Lavin contributed early for Stanford by driving in a run with a single and hitting his fourth home run of the season, extending Stanford’s streak of games with at least one home run to eighteen—the longest since May-June 2022 for the team.
Seven pitchers were used by Stanford throughout Sunday’s contest, collectively allowing only three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out thirteen batters. The Cardinal will next host Clemson for another conference series starting Friday.
