Stanford University announced on Apr. 1 that several of its current and former women’s soccer players have been selected for upcoming national team duties with the United States and England.
The announcement is significant as it highlights Stanford’s ongoing contribution to international women’s soccer, with representation at both senior and youth levels for major competitions in April.
Olympic gold medalists Sophia Wilson and Tierna Davidson will return to the U.S. Women’s National Team roster, joining three other former Cardinal—Jane Campbell, Naomi Girma, and Kennedy Wesley—for a training camp ahead of three matches against Japan. Head coach Emma Hayes selected these five former Stanford players as part of a 26-player squad. Wilson returns after a 17-month absence following her pregnancy, while Davidson comes back from an ACL injury that sidelined her for over a year.
The U.S. will face Japan in San Jose on April 11, Seattle on April 14, and Commerce City, Colorado on April 17. These games are part of preparations leading up to future international tournaments.
In addition to senior call-ups, Stanford will send three players—Caroline Birkel, Lizzie Boamah, and Y-Lan Nguyen—to the U-20 Women’s National Team training camp in Kansas City from April 7-16. The camp includes two matches against Brazil’s U-20 team as part of Teal Rising Week events celebrating global women’s soccer.
On the international front beyond the United States, Eleanor Klinger has been called up by newly-appointed head coach Lydia Bedford for England’s Under-23 squad competing in Spain during mid-April. The team faces top European sides including the Netherlands in semi-final play.
These selections underscore Stanford’s role as a key talent pipeline for both American and English women’s national teams.
