Santa Clara women’s tennis lost to Washington State by a score of 4-2 in a West Coast Conference match on April 16 at the Degheri Tennis Center.
The match was significant for both teams as Santa Clara aimed to improve its conference record, while Washington State sought to maintain its position near the top of the league standings.
Santa Clara took an early lead after winning the doubles point with victories from Lizanne Boyer and Juliette Krumholz, as well as Tian Yu Dong and Ashley Katz. Dong and Katz secured their win over Chisato Kanemaki and Maxine Murphy with a score of 6-3 on court one. However, Washington State responded by winning three consecutive singles matches. Kanemaki defeated Dong in straight sets, followed by Martina Puvill’s win over Anna Rahman. Boyer came close to leveling the match against Murphy but ultimately lost in a third-set tiebreak. Katz managed to earn another point for Santa Clara with a three-set victory over Yura Nakagawa before Eva Alvarez Sande clinched the overall win for Washington State by defeating Daniella Dimitrova.
The results showed that Santa Clara now holds a record of 7-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play, while Washington State improved to 15-6 overall and second place in league standings at 7-1 WCC.
Looking ahead, Santa Clara will conclude its regular season on Friday when it hosts Gonzaga at home. The team will recognize five seniors—Lizanne Boyer, Daniella Dimitrova, Tian Yu Dong, Jamie Pope, and Anna Semler—prior to the match.
