Santa Clara University’s women’s water polo team concluded its participation in the Claremont Convergence tournament on Saturday with two losses. The Broncos, now holding a 3-18 record, were defeated by No. 5 Arizona State with a score of 24-5 and later lost narrowly to Concordia, 13-12.
In the match against Arizona State, the Sun Devils began strongly, scoring the first six goals before Santa Clara responded. Arizona State led 9-1 after the opening period and extended their advantage to 15-2 by halftime. The third quarter saw limited scoring, but Arizona State maintained control and finished with a dominant fourth quarter that included a six-goal run.
Five Santa Clara players each scored once during the game, with Avary Torres providing the team’s only assist. Goalkeeper Haley Tassell made three saves over two periods, while Fritzi Warneke played in goal for the remaining quarters. For Arizona State, Kat Featherstone led with four goals and two assists; Millie Quin and Itziar Almeda each added three goals. Leila Meraz contributed four assists, and both Sanne Keijzer and Keri Glad recorded four saves apiece.
The Broncos’ second game against Concordia was closely contested throughout. Santa Clara opened strong with four consecutive goals in the first quarter for a 4-1 lead. By halftime, they held an 8-6 advantage after converting a penalty shot late in the second quarter.
Concordia tied the game at 10 at the end of the third quarter after scoring three unanswered goals. In the final period, Concordia took a two-goal lead before Santa Clara reduced it to one late in regulation but could not regain possession for another chance.
Calla Troxel was pivotal for Santa Clara with five goals and three assists—totaling eight points for the game. Megan Chambliss added three goals while Torres provided three assists. Tassell registered 11 blocks as goalkeeper.
For Concordia, Anna Tyukasz, Sierrah Ferguson, and Alexa De Villiers each scored twice among ten different scorers on their roster. Hannah Edwards led her team with four assists and Jaden Soto made 15 saves.
Santa Clara is scheduled to resume Golden Coast Conference play next Saturday against LMU at 11 a.m.
