Santa Clara women’s volleyball lost in four sets to conference leader San Diego on Saturday at the Leavey Center. The Broncos managed to win the third set but were unable to maintain momentum, ultimately falling in the fourth set.
San Diego started strong in the first set, building a 4-1 lead and later extending it to 15-8 by the media timeout. The Toreros continued their run, finishing the opening set 25-16. In the second set, San Diego went up 9-5 with five straight points and eventually took the set 25-19.
Santa Clara responded in the third set, opening with a 4-1 lead after an ace from Selin Aslayan. Back-to-back aces from Grace Flanagan increased their advantage to 12-5. Macy Hinshaw added another ace for a 23-14 lead before Morgan Hayes secured the set for Santa Clara at 25-21.
In the fourth set, San Diego established a 10-5 advantage and pulled ahead further after several consecutive points, eventually closing out both the set and match.
“Grace Flanagan had 12 kills, her seventh game of the season in double figures,” according to team statistics. “Layla Truitt had her team leading 19th game of the season in double figures with 10 kills.” Selin Aslayan also contributed with “12 kills, her ninth game this season with 10 or more.” Lexi Trapani recorded “13 digs for her 23rd time this season in double figures.” Macy Hinshaw finished with “42 assists and seven digs, two digs short of her 12th double-double of the season.”
The Broncos totaled eight service aces during the match, coming close to their season high of ten aces achieved against San Jose State on September 16.
Santa Clara will play Washington State at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
