Santa Clara women’s basketball secured an 81-63 victory over Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at the Leavey Center. The Broncos improved their record to 5-2, while Fresno State fell to 3-3.
Santa Clara began the game strongly, scoring the first 10 points and leading 18-15 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Broncos extended their lead and went into halftime ahead 40-26. Fresno State responded in the third quarter with an early run that cut Santa Clara’s lead to six points. The Bulldogs came within two points three times in the fourth quarter, but Santa Clara answered with a decisive 14-1 run late in the game.
Santa Clara shot 41.9 percent from the field and made five of eighteen attempts from three-point range. They converted twenty-four of thirty-two free throws. Four players scored at least fifteen points for Santa Clara, led by Sophie Glancey who had seventeen points, twelve rebounds, and five blocks. Ashley Hawkins contributed sixteen points and six assists, while Maia Jones and Ava Schmidt each added fifteen points; Schmidt also tied her career high in scoring and collected seven rebounds.
Fresno State shot forty percent from the floor and made four of eight three-pointers. Ashlyn Rean led all scorers with twenty-four points on ten-of-twelve shooting and grabbed ten rebounds for a double-double. Jasia Gamble also reached double figures with fourteen points.
Santa Clara outrebounded Fresno State forty to thirty-three overall and fifteen to eleven on offensive boards.
After this win, Santa Clara will play Lindenwood next in Honolulu as part of the American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
