Santa Clara softball won both games of a doubleheader against San Diego on April 10 at the SCU Softball Stadium. The Broncos collected a total of 22 hits across the two games, winning the opener 9-1 and coming from behind to take the second game 8-5.
The victories mark Santa Clara’s third consecutive West Coast Conference series win this season and their eighth straight dating back to last year. The team displayed strong offense with eight extra-base hits, including three home runs in the doubleheader.
In game one, Rebecca Rubio went three-for-three at bat while Taryn Clements drove in three runs, helping Santa Clara secure a run-rule victory. Clements hit her second home run of the season during a nine-run surge in the second and third innings. Pitcher Ellison Schroeder allowed only two hits over five innings for her ninth win of the year, tying teammate Cari Ferguson for most wins on the team.
Game two saw Santa Clara overcome an early five-run deficit by scoring eight unanswered runs. Leiora Davidson hit a two-run home run and Hazyl Gray added another homer to tie the game before Marie Martorella’s single gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Avery Seva pitched over three scoreless innings in relief to earn her second win of the season.
The final game of this series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
