Santa Clara University’s men’s golf team secured a runner-up finish at the Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, Washington, on Wednesday. Senior Calder Overfelt led the Broncos and nearly claimed his first individual title. Overfelt was ahead by one stroke entering the final three holes but bogeyed the par-3 16th. This allowed Washington State’s Dylan Burcham to tie for the lead. Overfelt made par on his last two holes, while Burcham birdied the 18th to win.
Overfelt finished at 14-under 199, tying for the third-lowest score to par in program history and becoming only the second player in Santa Clara history with a sub-200 total. J.P. Odland holds the record with a 198 (-15) from last season.
Santa Clara posted one of its best team rounds ever, shooting a 17-under 267—tied for third-best in school history—and finishing with a three-round total of 39-under 813, which ties for second-lowest all-time for the program. The Broncos placed second behind host Washington State, who finished at 45-under 807.
“Despite not winning the individual trophy, Overfelt’s overall performance was one for the record books as he finished 14-under 199. The score is tied for the third-lowest to par in program history and is just the second sub-200 total in program history, joining J.P. Odland’s 198 (-15) from last season,” according to Santa Clara University Athletics.
Other notable performances included Matt Robles, who finished fourth at 11-under 202 after a bogey-free final round of four-under-par (67). “Robles turned in an outstanding 11-under 202 (tied for his second lowest score-to-par in his career) and closed the event with a bang,” according to Santa Clara officials.
J.P. Odland shot an eight-under-par (63), moving up to ninth place overall at eight under (205). His round is tied for fourth-lowest score-to-par in school history and marked his ninth career top-10 finish.
Graduate transfer Kevin Hollomon and freshman Tucker Sweeney each carded two-under-par rounds (69) on their final day of play.
Santa Clara finished well ahead of Colorado and Pacific (both at -28), while Boise State rounded out fifth place at -23.
The Broncos will continue their fall season next weekend at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
