Santa Clara University’s beach volleyball team defeated Hawaii Pacific University with a 5-0 sweep on April 10 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu.
The win marks a strong start for Santa Clara as they begin their weekend trip to Hawaii. The Broncos won all five pairs matches in straight sets, limiting the Sharks to single digits in six of the ten sets played.
Kawena Chillingworth and Reilly Rose Gilliland secured an early victory at the No. 5 spot, winning against Elle Acchione and Aliyah Baker with scores of 21-7 and 21-3. Ciara Cantlen and Noelle Niederman followed at No. 3, defeating Alayna Grinstead and Jordyn McCutcheon, while Ava Stoddard and Alexandra Urbina posted a win at No. 4 over Peyton McBride and Olivia Tangaan.
At the No. 2 position, Mandy Hansen and Sammy Wood beat Jordan Pascone and Lindsey Tapp with scores of 21-10 and 21-12. Avery Cukjati and Teagan Wilson completed the sweep for Santa Clara by overcoming Rosie Larkin and Ella Schoene at No.1 after taking a close first set that went to extra points.
The Broncos will continue their trip on Saturday with a neutral-site match against Oregon before closing out their stay on Sunday with another game versus Oregon as well as one against host Hawaii.
