The Santa Clara University baseball team defeated San Jose State 5-3 at Stephen Schott Stadium on Mar. 30, extending its winning streak to four games and clinching the season series against its crosstown rival.
This victory is important for the Broncos as it continues their momentum in non-conference play and builds confidence ahead of upcoming West Coast Conference matchups.
Pitchers Tyler Alleman and Brayden Dotoli each delivered three strong innings, allowing just one run combined while striking out six batters. Alleman earned his first career win with three strikeouts, while Dotoli followed with three shutout frames. Freshman Max Reimers pitched a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout, and Hunter Hargett closed the game with a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the year.
San Jose State struggled on the mound, issuing ten free passes—six walks and four hit batters—and throwing three wild pitches. This allowed Santa Clara to capitalize, scoring three of their five runs from runners who reached base without a hit. The Broncos took an early lead in the first inning after Ben Cleary was hit by a pitch, Johnny Luetzow walked, Tate Medicoff singled to load the bases, then Max Ross was hit by another pitch and Payton Lambert walked.
Santa Clara continued to add runs in later innings thanks to more free passes and wild pitches from San Jose State pitchers. In total, Santa Clara pitchers struck out ten batters—the twelfth time this season they have recorded double-digit strikeouts—and Cleary extended his reached-base safely streak to 26 games.
Looking ahead, Santa Clara will resume West Coast Conference play on the road against two-time defending regular season champion San Diego starting Thursday.
