The Santa Clara University baseball team clinched a West Coast Conference series victory against Loyola Marymount University on March 28, winning 4-2 at Stephen Schott Stadium. The Broncos relied on three home runs, errorless defense, and effective pitching to secure the win.
The outcome is significant for Santa Clara as it marks their second conference win of the season and demonstrates both offensive power and defensive reliability. The team’s performance included keeping LMU scoreless in key moments and maintaining composure under pressure.
Santa Clara took an early lead with Tate Medicoff’s home run in the second inning. Mateo Garcia and Waylon Walsh added back-to-back solo shots in the fourth, extending the lead to 4-1. Walsh’s homer was his second in as many games. Ben Cleary contributed an RBI single that pushed his reached-base streak to 24 games.
On the mound, Jackson Cook started with three innings allowing one run on two hits. Josh Johnson earned his first win of the season by pitching two shutout innings with three strikeouts. Cooper Lanz provided solid relief before Hunter Hargett closed out the game with a double play and secured his third save of the year.
Defensively, Johnny Luetzow helped stop an early LMU threat by throwing out a runner during a double steal attempt, while Will Anderson made a crucial leaping grab to end the game without errors for Santa Clara—their fourteenth errorless contest this season.
The Broncos now look ahead to their next matchup as they aim to build on this momentum when they face LMU again in Sunday’s series finale at Schott Stadium.
