The Santa Clara University baseball team lost to the University of San Diego on April 4, with the Toreros securing a 13-7 victory at Fowler Park and completing a three-game West Coast Conference sweep.
The game saw both teams produce strong offensive numbers, combining for 20 runs and 24 hits. Santa Clara managed three multi-hit performances and reached double-digit hits for the tenth time this season but could not overcome San Diego’s nine extra-base hits, including four home runs.
Ben Cleary led the Broncos by tying his career high with three hits and driving in two runs during a seventh-inning rally. Payton Lambert recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, while Max Ross contributed with his team-leading tenth double. Despite these efforts, Santa Clara fell behind early as San Diego built an 11-1 lead through five innings. Key moments included solo home runs from CJ Moran and Gabe Springer for San Diego, as well as a two-run homer from Andrew Gauna during a four-run fourth inning.
Johnny Luetzow added offense for Santa Clara with his second home run of the year. Pitcher Jace Gillmore took the loss after striking out five over three innings. For San Diego, Fernando Palencia earned the win by pitching six innings and allowing only three runs.
San Diego’s nine extra-base hits were their most since May 2025 against Santa Clara. The Broncos now have ten games this season with at least ten team hits, splitting those contests evenly between wins and losses.
Looking ahead, Santa Clara will begin a four-game homestand against Clemson starting Monday.
